Type Locality and Naming

Central-Eastern Inner Mongolia. The naming section is located on the slope of the Baron Sog platform on the western bank of the Xar Moron River, Inner Mongolia. Named by Zhang Xiti in 1930.

Synonym: Ulan Gochu Fm


Lithology and Thickness

Primarily a sequence of red muddy deposits, 17 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Disconformable contact with the underlying Middle Eocene Shara Murun Fm (Shalamulun Fm).

Upper contact

Disconformable contact with the overlying Late Eocene Baron Sog Fm (Balunsuo Fm).

Fossils

More than ten species of fossil vertebrates are found in this formation, of which the main species are Gobiolagus andrewsi, Desmatolagus vetustus, Ardynomys sp., Anagale gobiensis, Mongolestes hadrodens, Metatitian primus, Embolotherium loucksii, E. andrewsi and Cadurcodon sp..


Age 

The age of this formation was suggested to be Early Oligocene in the past, but Wang et al. (2019) inferred it was late Middle Eocene. Y.Q. Wang et al. (2019, Paleogene chapter of China Integrated Stratigraphy and Timescale) indicate a mid-Bartonian through earliest Priabonian age
